"'Head up' interaction: can we break our addiction to the screen and keyboard?"

Professor Stephen Brewster, Multimodal Interaction Group:Department of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, UK

Abstract

Our interactions with mobile devices are based on techniques developed for desktop computers in the 1970s such as buttons, sliders, windows and progress bars. This keynote will look at the possibility of moving away from these kinds of interactions to ones more suited to mobile devices and their dynamic contexts of use where users need to be able to look where they are going, carry shopping bags and hold on to children. A range of multimodal (audio and tactile) interactions will be presented which can be used eyes and hands free, and to allow users to interact in a 'head up' way.

Professor Brewster will present some of the work his group has completed on input using pressure, and gestures done with fingers, wrist and head, along with work on output using non-speech audio, 3D sound and tactile displays in applications such as text entry, camera phone interfaces and navigation. He will talk about how they designed these for mobile use and the evaluation techniques developed to assess whether they are effective or not for users on the move.

“The Internet in Business: How the Internet and Internet Applications are changing business processes and enabling new business models”

Peter Alexander, Vice-President, Cisco Worldwide Field Marketing

Abstract

The impact of rich Internet applications and Internet-optimized computing technologies will increase as they deliver substantial business benefits while empowering companies to create wholly new kinds of engaging, innovative experiences for customers, partners and employees. This keynote focuses on how B2B markets provide the best path for monetization of these applications by tracing how they transform the business processes of the various functions in an organization, leading to new uses and organizational structures. Mr. Alexander will:

- Compare internet-based businesses with non-internet-based businesses to show how internet applications reduce costs and increase the value of the investment
- Show how technologies that use existing budgets vs. new ones provide greater opportunity
- Explore the issue of commoditization in B2B technologies and show how technologies reverse these trends and provide ways to innovate, add value and reduce costs
- Look at the impact of these technologies on Cisco’s business, organization and operations both now and going forward

As viewed from the perspective of an industry user and leader, Mr. Alexander will challenge developers to look at business processes first, and only then look at how their new technologies will change them.

"The Future of Learning and Teaching"

Professor Udo Bleimann, Managing Director igdv – Center for Advanced Learning:Media and Simulation, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences; Director aida - Institute of Applied Informatics, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences

Abstract

We are living in a 'Knowledge Society', one which has a great impact on Learning and Teaching. Facts and figures are no longer that important!
We all have to learn "how to learn?" and will make use of the ability througout our lives..
We all have to learn "how to adapt to rapidly changing situations?".
We all have to learn "how to solve problems in teams?", which leads to a much greater significance for social skills.

This Keynote tries to find some answers to these and other questions in line with the speaker's research principles of "Learn Your Own Way" and "Learning by Contribution".

TUTORIAL - Geographic Information Systems: A hands-on Introduction to GIS with a simple application in Wi-Fi Security [Part I] (Room B119)

Professor Daniel Farkas & Dr. Li-Chiou Chen, Pace University, New York, USA

Summary

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyze information in which data is location based. These systems provide a powerful paradigm for looking at problems in new ways and creating web-based solutions (interactive maps) that can be shared with broad audiences. This tutorial will give a hands-on overview of GIS using a variety of freely available tools and web-based datasets (US Census data, Google Maps, Google Earth, Open Source GIS (QGIS), ArcGIS) to give participants the knowledge needed to get started developing their own applications. Participants with laptops will create their own GIS applications.

Outline:
1. Overview of GIS Concepts
2. GIS Databases and Sources
3. Collecting Data – Global Positioning (GPS)
4. Spatial Analysis
5. GIS and the Web
6. Hands-on Wi-Fi Security Exercise

(Session will continue after the tea/coffee break if necessary)

TUTORIAL - Supporting the development of web-based applications with lightweight software generators [Part I] (Room B114)

Professor Andreas Schmidt, Institut für Angewandte Informatik/Hochschule Karlsruhe, Germany

Summary

Roughly speaking, the development of web-based applications may be divided into an interesting part that is mostly given by the application logics and a more mechanical, and hence boring, part, including the infrastructure code necessary for the platform, major parts of interface development, connection of the database, error treatment, etc.

In view of this situation, OMG has launched the MDA initiative and propagates an own model-driven development process based on both powerful and complex software generators. These generators usually possess a UML-based metamodel that is able in principle to generate the source code for large parts of an application. Such generators, however, require a long training period and their use often is worthwhile under certain boundary conditions (development of software families etc.) only. Within the framework of a tutorial, by contrast, various lightweight generators (e.g. code munger, inline code expander, mixed code generator) shall be developed for concrete tasks on the basis of regular expressions. It is aimed at automatically generating large parts of the mechanical, and, hence, boring code. The input of the generators consists of existing source texts, from which information is extracted and then transformed to a source code, or of simple models describing the application to be implemented.

The tutorial will be aimed at familiarizing the participants with the power of regular expressions and at demonstrating their suitability for software development. After the tutorial, the participants will be able to recognize the potential of lightweight generators in software development and also will be able to develop their own generators based on regular expressions.

The source code of the generators developed will be made available to the course participants, together with a plug and play development environment and the presented transparencies.

(Session will continue after the tea/coffee break if necessary)
